From a Lambda-Lith to an Event Driven Architecture – Lessons Learned

In this talk, you will learn about the challenges of the "Lambda-Lith" approach and the benefits of embracing EDAs. Are you on a serverless journey on AWS, starting with the popular stack of Amazon ApiGateway, AWS Lambda, and Amazon DynamoDB? While this combination is a simple way to get started, it can quickly become a monolithic and unmaintainable solution. If so, it's time to discover the power of Event-Driven Architectures (EDAs). We will show different solution architectures, discussing their trade-offs and sharing insights from real-world experiences.

During this session, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of essential EDA concepts, such as the significance of idempotency and its implementation on AWS. You will dive deep on the practical aspects of constructing serverless EDAs using AWS EventBridge and AWS Step Functions. Furthermore, we will showcase how to incorporate approval workflows using AWS Step Functions.

We will address common pitfalls we have taken so you can avoid them. By the end of this session, you will be equipped with the knowledge and practical guidance needed to harness the full potential of event-driven architectures on AWS, enabling you to build scalable, modular, and maintainable serverless applications.

What's the focus of your work these days?

I'm currently working on applying Event-Driven Architectures (EDAs) to multiple projects hosted on AWS. This work has given me a deep understanding of how to implement complex use cases with EDAs on AWS.

What technical aspects of your role are most important?

Keeping an overview of what’s going on in the industry. Only having an overview of current trends enables us to provide tailored solutions to our customers.

How does your InfoQ Dev Summit Munich session address current challenges or trends in the industry?

Getting started with EDAs on AWS can be challenging. Therefore, this session and its "lessons learned” section provide valuable insights into how to implement EDAs on AWS

How do you see the concepts discussed in your InfoQ Dev Summit Munich session shaping the future of the industry?

“Shaping the future of the industry” might sound a bit ambitious, but the concepts introduced in this session help one build better EDAs on AWS and flatten the initial learning curve.
